He knows better than to trust anyone, but when a total stranger saves him from a vicious gang, the unexpected act of kindness rekindles Finn’s lost faith in humanity.

The tentative friendship with his rescuer, Spencer, gradually turns into something more, and for the first time in years, Finn lets himself yearn for joy and hope in the dead of nuclear winter—right until Spencer goes missing.

They say love is the greatest power of all, but it seems it would take nothing short of a miracle to overcome the dangers that threaten to destroy Finn’s only chance for happiness and the lives of his loved ones.

*I received the ebook in exchange for an honest review*

Despite having had one of the author’s books on my TBR for a couple of months, this is actually the first book by the author I have read. I had no idea what to expect, especially maybe the book being depressing, being post-nuclear-war one.

Surprisingly, the book was the opposite of being depressing! It had grim descriptions of surroundings and of some people, violence and devastation, just like most of post-apocalyptic books. However, there was not just a sliver of hope but overwhelming feeling of it. Yes, Finn has to wade through desolate land and look for old medicine, and yes, the sky is always grey…but there are also good people who help with things. Even though we don’t encounter many of them in the book (who would look for other people when the food is a main commodity?), there is Spencer, who enters in Finn’s life accidentally.

I made a note while reading that Finn and Spencer’s love seems a bit like instalove, but I think it’s done really well, plus I guess that “rules” are different while you’re fighting for survival every day.

I loved the characters. Finn, thinking he doesn’t deserve good things, taking care for his sister. Spencer, hunting rats for soup (which is supposedly one of the best things in the hell they’re living), and Siobhan, there to tell Finn he deserves good things.

I adored this novella, and I kind of wished it was longer. Some parts, maybe, were skimmed over, ended really fast, but that’s a limitation of novellas. I think this could absolutely function as a full-length novel, but it was also an amazing novella and I can totally recommend it to anyone. ❤

Oh, and I have something special coming on 27th, so come back and check it out 🙂
